Brito,Leomara Pessoa; Araújo Lacerda,José Dantas; Araújo Soares,Cintia; Monteiro Júnior,Franklin Luís Carlos; Souza,Magno Chagas; Aguiar Fonseca e Souza,Áurea Izabel; Lima,Clenes Cunha; Rodrigues,Marcos.
Abstract This study aimed to verify the impact of different methods of overcoming dormancy in the germination of Ipomoea cavalcantei seeds, in addition to surveying the biometric data of its seeds and fruits. Ripe fruits were randomly collected from the species' habitat, which is a unique ecosystem characterized by small vegetation and iron outcrops. For the biometric analyses, the weight, moisture content, length, width, and thickness of 100 fruits and 100 seeds were determined. To analyse the efficiency of overcoming seed dormancy, six different treatments were tested, including mechanical, physical, and chemical methods, and the resultant germinability, average germination time, and germination speed index were evaluated. Further, in order to estimate...

Deep-sea nematode assemblage has not recovered 26 years after experimental mining of polymetallic nodules (Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, Tropical Eastern Pacific) ArchiMer
Miljutin, Dmitry M.; Miljutina, Maria A.; Arbizu, Pedro Martinez; Galeron, Joelle.
We investigated nematode assemblages inhabiting the 26-year-old track created by experimental deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules, and two adjacent, undisturbed sites, one with nodules and one without nodules. The aim was to compare density, assemblage structure, and diversity indices in order to assess the process of recovery of the nematode assemblage inhabiting the disturbed site. This experimental dredging was conducted in 1978 by the Ocean Minerals Company (USA) in the area of a French mining claim in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (Tropical Eastern Pacific) at a depth of about 5000 m. The nematode assemblage had not returned its initial state 26 years after the experimental dredging: the total nematode density and biomass within the...

Dialogues between social and natural sciences: contribution to the debate on socio-environmental conflicts Anais da ABC (AABC)
Milanez,Bruno.
ABSTRACT In this article, I argue that attempting to solve real problems is a possible approach to bring social and natural sciences together, and suggest that - as Environmental Impact Assessment necessarily brings together social and environmental issues - this debate is a strong candidate for such a task. The argument is based on a general discussion about the possibilities and limitations of Environmental Impact Assessments, the social-environmental impacts of mining activities and three case studies. The analysis of the cases indicates possibilities and limitations of the dialogue between scientists from various areas - and of the collaboration with social movements and affected communities - in avoiding negative impacts of mining projects and,...

Growth and nutritional status of Brazilian wood species Cedrella fissilis and Anadenanthera peregrina in bauxite spoil in response to arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation and substrate amendment BJM
Tótola,Marcos Rogério; Borges,Arnaldo Chaer.
The growth of Cedrella fissilis Vell. (Cedro Rosa) and of Anadenanthera peregrina Benth (Angico Vermelho) in bauxite spoil was studied to evaluate their response to substrate amendment or to inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The plants were grown in bauxite spoil, topsoil or spoil amended with either topsoil or compost, and inoculated with the AMF Acaulospora scrobiculata, Gigaspora margarita or Glomus etunicatum. Root colonization was highly dependent on the interaction plant-fungus-substrate. In C. fissilis, root colonization by Gigaspora margarita dropped from 75% in bauxite spoil to only 4% in topsoil. Contrarily, root colonization of A. peregrina by the same fungus increased from 48% in spoil to 60% in topsoil. Root colonization of...

Heavy metal bioaccumulation of the characiform Brycon falcatus Muller & Troschel, 1844 in the Teles Pires basin, Southern Amazon Biological Sciences
Matos, Liliane Stedile de; Silva, Daniela Rocha da; Silva, João Otavio Santos; Andrade, Ricardo Lopes Tortorela; Carvalho, Lucélia Nobre.
The Teles Pires River basin is located in an area of the Southern Amazon where discharge of tannery effluents and intense agricultural activity occurs. These activities increase the risk of contamination by runoff and leaching of pesticides and heavy metals. This study presents the concentration and bioaccumulation of heavy metals copper (Cu) and total chromium (Cr) in matrinxã (Brycon falcatus), a species of fish highly consumed in the region. Liver and muscle tissue was analyzed from 41 samples of B. falcatus collected during the dry season in 2013 from the Teles Pires River basin. Considering that bioaccumulation is the progressive increase in the amount of a substance in an organism or part of an organism, copper bioaccumulation in liver samples from...

Heavy metals distribution of soils around mining sites of cadmium-rich marine sedimentary phosphorites of Kpogamé and Hahotoé (Southern Togo) OceanDocs
Gnandi, K.; Tobschall, H.J..
Metal concentrations of 37 soil samples taken from mining areas (abandoned mine pits and transport routes) in Kpogamé and Hahotoé (southern Togo) range from 0.2-43 ppm for Cd, 15-115 ppm for Pb, 182-1,029 ppm for Cr, 18-356 ppm for Cu, 15-342 pm for Ni, 90-513 ppm for V, 35-536 ppm for Zn, 80-469 ppm for Zr and 266-3,161 ppm for Sr. The tropical alteration of the ore waste plays an important role in the distribution of trace elements in the studied soils. Because the alteration affects the element mobility, generally old abandoned mining areas, which , together with soils near the transport routes, show a higher degree of contamination. Under low pH and oxidising conditions in studied soils Cd, Ni and Zn are generally easily mobilised and are thus...

Horizontal structure and floristic composition of the shrubby-arboreal strata in forests planted to rehabilitate a degraded area of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Rio do Janeiro Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Farias dos Santos,Joana; Roppa,Cristiane; Holanda de Oliveira,Schweyka Stanley; Valcarcel,Ricardo.
The study was taken in a reclamation area where soil was removed up to 13 meters deep in 1979, near Itaguaí county, Brazil (23º 55' 07'' S, 43º 49' 73'' O). In 2007 the composition and horizontal structure of the shrubby-arboreal strata was evaluated in five 13 years old forest plantations with similar environment conditions. For rehabilitation, rustic pioneer species were used to guarantee a sustainable successional process, which depends on species selection and their functional complementarities. Treatments were: T0 (control); T1 (100 % of exotic species); T2 (52% of exotic species); T3 (50% exotic and 50% native); T4 (39% exotic and 61% native); and T5 (15% exotic and 85% native). Variables measured were height, DBH (≥ 3.0 cm), basal area,...

Larvae of Lutrochus germari (Lutrochidae: Coleoptera) and Stegoelmis sp. (Elmidae: Coleoptera): bore submerged woody debris in Neotropical streams Rev. Bras. Zool.
Valente-Neto,Francisco; Fonseca-Gessner,Alaíde Aparecida.
We report boring activity of larval Lutrochus germari Grouvelle, 1889 and Stegoelmis sp. in submerged woody debris and describe the resulting grooves and faecal pellet production. This ability of the larvae was shown by three types of evidence: 1) examination of collected woody debris, 2) rearing of larvae and 3) gut content analysis. The larvae excavated galleries deep into the submerged woody debris. This is the first record of gallery-forming behaviour in submerged woody debris by aquatic beetles, adding larval Lutrochus germari and Stegoelmis sp. to the list of borers in Neotropical aquatic systems.

Zegarra Mendez, Eduardo; Orihuela, Jose Carlos; Paredes, Maritza.

Mining method selection by integrated AHP and PROMETHEE method Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bogdanovic,Dejan; Nikolic,Djordje; Ilic,Ivana.
Selecting the best mining method among many alternatives is a multicriteria decision making problem. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the implementation of an integrated approach that employs AHP and PROMETHEE together for selecting the most suitable mining method for the "Coka Marin" underground mine in Serbia. The related problem includes five possible mining methods and eleven criteria to evaluate them. Criteria are accurately chosen in order to cover the most important parameters that impact on the mining method selection, such as geological and geotechnical properties, economic parameters and geographical factors. The AHP is used to analyze the structure of the mining method selection problem and to determine weights of the criteria, and...

Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) of Halmahera, Indonesia Naturalis
Cheek, M..
Two new paniculate species of Nepenthes, N. halmahera and N. weda, both allied to N. danseri Jebb & Cheek, are described respectively from lowland and lower montane forest on ultramafic substrate. Nepenthes weda appears to be unique in the genus due to the adaxial tepal surfaces which in the distal portion are hairy and lack nectar glands. This species is also unique among paniculate members of the genus in its forward-facing, concave subapical lid appendage. Both species are currently only known from the Weda Bay Nickel Project concession area in Halmahera, Indonesia, and are assessed as Critically Endangered using the 2012 IUCN standard. Two character states are formally described and named for the first time in Nepenthes: nanophyll rosettes and...

Occurrence of Yeast Species in Soils under Native and Modified Vegetation in an Iron Mining Area Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Moreira,Geisianny Augusta Monteiro; Vale,Helson Mario Martins do.
ABSTRACT Soils of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero are rich in mineral resources, especially gold and iron. Soil management and mining activities greatly impact soil biology. However, studies addressed to the diversity of microorganisms and their ecological role in the recovery of these areas are scarce. This study aimed to assess the yeast occurrence in soils with natural vegetation (Atlantic Forest, neotropical savanna, and iron outcrop) and areas with anthropogenic modifications (Eucalyptus stand and rehabilitated area) in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region. We isolated and identified a total of 68 yeast. Partial sequencing of the 26S ribosomal gene revealed the presence of six genera: Saitozyma, Pseudozyma, Meyerozyma, Debaryomyces, Lipomyces, and...

Optimal Resource Extraction Contracts Under Threat of Expropriation AgEcon
Engel, Eduardo M.R.A.; Fischer, Ronald.
The government contracts with a foreign firm to extract a natural resource that requires an upfront investment and which faces price uncertainty. In states where profits are high, there is a likelihood of expropriation, which generates a social cost that increases with the expropriated value. In this environment, the planner's optimal contract avoids states with high probability of expropriation. The contract can be implemented via a competitive auction with reasonable informational requirements. The bidding variable is a cap on the present value of discounted revenues, and the firm with the lowest bid wins the contract. The basic framework is extended to incorporate government subsidies, unenforceable investment effort and political moral hazard, and the...

Physical quality of bauxite tailing after a decade of environmental recovery Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Guimarães,Lorena Abdalla de Oliveira Prata; Dias,Luiz Eduardo; Rocha,Genelício Crusoé; Assis,Igor Rodrigues de; Fernandes,Raphael Bragança Alves.
ABSTRACT Tailings from bauxite washing produced in Porto Trombetas, Pará state, a Brazilian Amazon region, have chemical and physical characteristics limiting the development of plants, which hinders to revegetate the tanks where they are deposited. This study was carried out under field conditions, and aimed to assess the physical quality of these tailings after a decade of recovery practices. Three treatments were assessed: no application of inputs and planting of seedlings (T1) and two levels of fertilization, one with lower (T2) and other with higher (T3) doses of limestone and fertilizers associated with planting tree seedlings. After ten years of experimentation, penetration resistance (PR) and substrate moisture up to 60 cm depth were assessed and...

Phytostabilization of massive mine wastes with native phytogenetic resources: potential for sustainable use and conservation of the native flora in north-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Orchard,Cristina; León-Lobos,Pedro; Ginocchio,Rosanna.
The mining industry has left an important legacy of inadequately abandoned tailing storage facilities (TSFs) in the north-central area of Chile, and they may pose environmental risks. The Chilean government has recently established new regulations governing the closure of TSFs, and these regulations favor the use of environmentally sustainable technologies. Among these technologies is phytostabilization, which can use native plant species that may also have economic and/or subsistence value. Phytostabilization programs based on sustainably maintained native species could also contribute to the conservation of both local flora and regional ecosystems in north-central Chile. The main objective of this study was to use the Coquimbo region as a case study area...
